Donations for nature conservation instead of compensation for CO2 emissions

More direct bookings through the accommodation's official websites, means saving a lot of money for the accommodations. Per booking approximately 12% of the booking amount. For instance, a booking of about € 1000, =.  Nowadays, with all these bookings made through the booking websites, the owner of your hotel or other holiday accommodation must transfer an amount of no less than € 120 to Booking, Expedia, Hotels or one of the other big booking controlers. These booking websites make billions in profits every year.

When travelers book as much as possible directly, huge parts of the amounts of money mentioned above, will be saved by the accommodations.

With our website we want to stimulate 'direct booking'. By developing a strong and attractive platform Hotelload hopes to create much traffic on the website. In addition, accommodations can give a boost to their direct booking numbers by advertising on this website.
The income that Hotelload generates with its advertising activities, will be donated to nature conservation goals.

Why donations for nature conservation instead of compensation for CO2 emissions?

CO2-neutral flying is almost impossible (see Trouw 13-02-2020: '' Can you enter a plane CO2-neutral? That is disappointing. '').
The compensation projects usually consist of forest, wind or cooker projects.
Measuring the CO2 profit of forest and cooking appliance projects is often wrong and wind projects sell cheap certificates from windmills that have already been amply financed.

In 2016, the Öko Institut checked the results of 5,500 projects. The results showed that the CO2 profit was overestimated in 98% of the projects. In fact, this means that CO2-neutral travel is much more expensive than suggested by the providers of the compensation programs. Air carriers, travel organizations, Greenseats and Atmosfar, among others, estimate the environmental gains of their projects far too high and therefore pass on too little to travelers who want to compensate.

Projects that do not compensate what they preach or providers that compensate less than necessary are harmful, says climate scientist De Conink (Radboud University Nijmegen). "The polluter thinks that she/he compensates his emissions, but in reality that does not happen."

Despite the good intentions with which most compensation projects are launched, over time many projects get bogged down in purely numerical transactions. This creates a kind of false world. The environmental damage caused by flying is covered with a small amount of money or a small percentage. In the end, it comes down to not much more than buying off guilt. And if that is not enough to make you think twice, there is still the drawback of the costs for monitoring the projects and measuring the CO2 profit. Expensive organisations that have to do this kind of work cannot be circumvented.

In our view, it is simply better to donate to nature conservation goals without all the fancy CO2 emissions compensation marketing talk. It is the shortest way to compensation.

The starting points for choosing the donation targets are 'measurable result' and 'minimal overhead'.

On the one hand, we want to support 'small goals' (collect money for medicines, feed and materials for aid to animals, among others).

And on the other hand we want to support goals with a preventive value. For instance organizations that are focusing on the conservation of rain forests.

We distribute the profit of this website 50/50 between these two target groups.

If you know an initiative or foundation / association in the field of nature conservation to which the above principles apply, please let us know.
